Dear Colleagues:

I am retranslating Tolstoy's short story for the second edition of my Norton
Critical Anthology of Tolstoy's Short Fiction and have come across the
following:

"U Alyoshi nos, kak kobel' na bugre."

I am wondering if it means anything other than my literal rendering:
"a mutt on a mound."

Thanks for your help.
