            Dear Seelangovtsy and Jules,

 

            Just another thought: if the manifest writer’s language was
German, “hane” could be short for            

            dull, nondescript hair that is “coarse,” i.e., “hanebüchen”.

 

            I agree with Deborah that a visual of the manifest could be
very helpful.
