A Tolstoy question

Dear colleagues,

Somewhere Lev Tolstoy said that one should not try to write history /
historical fiction until about fifty years after the fact. Does anyone
recall when and where Tolstoy made such an assertion (or something
resembling it)?

Many thanks, and

Regards to the list,
