"foto" for "fotografia"?

My apologies to the list; my Russian font in Gmail didn't come through in
seelangs. :-) Internet multilingual gremlins lurk always. 

Here's a repost of my message:

Is it acceptable (in Russian) to use a shortened form of the word
"fotografia" - something like "foto"?
