Grim Knights (a chess query)

Der All,

I am not a chess player myself, but I have come across an English mnenomic
phrase and wonder if there is a Russian equivalent.

The phrase is:  "A Knight on the rim is grim" (alternate version: "A Knight
on the rim is dim"). As I understand it, this phrase is used to remind
students of chess that the knight is much more powerful when placed near the
center of the board.

Many thanks to anyone who can enlighten me. (And feel free to respond
off-list.)
