Grossman - translation problem - 'podvodny lyon'

Dear all,

There is an odd phrase in this passage of reminiscence about childhood years
by the Black Sea:
Он медленно ступал по округлым камням, ощущая ступней нежный подводный лен,

‘underwater flax’ does not appear to exist in English, and this sentence is
the only example of ‘podvodny lyon’ that Yandex can find.
