I would like to second Rebecca Pyatkevich's recommendation of Robert
Maguire's Dead Souls translation (and I studied the Guerney with him).
Maguire's translation, in my estimation, does the best job of approximating
the wonderful complexity of Gogol's language in a manner informed by his
(Maguire's) extraordinary scholarly sensitivity to Gogol's text. My two
cents, Cathy Nepomnyashchy

What are the better English translations of Dead Souls? Anyone care to call
one the best?
