QUERY: Spets(ial'nyye )kursy

It's an elective usually pertaining to the specialization, the major.

It's a course that is taught outside the grid. All students in a given 
program have to choose some spetskursy to narrow their specialty (say a 
math student takes algebra spetskursy). But they also can take some for 
fun, for general interest.
