Russian accent: investment in footbal

Some thoughts on recent postings.

Olga Meerson raises an interesting point: has anyone given any consideration to the question why Russian literature, taken generally, has a reputation for being particularly gloomy, at least among English-speaking non-specialists (if not non-readers)? Does it relate to the early translations (unlikely, I would have thought) or is it perhaps a projection of a widespread anglophone perception of the Russian character? And if it is the latter, where does this perception come from? Perhaps these questions have already been answered, but, if not, here is a research project for somebody at a loose end.

As for Mr Mutko's splendid peroration, all I can say is that it worked. As someone whose own brand of spoken English does not always travel too well, I have an uneasy suspicion that many FIFA delegates may have found Mr Mutko's English rather more comprehensible than that of, say, David Beckham.
