The fourth edition of Даль is helpful here.   S.v. свинка the phrase заморская свинка, to which Baudouin de Courtenay has added  морская свинка, is defined as a guinea pig (Cavia cobaja).  In addition морская свинка is given as a variant of морская свинья.

WE need to get away from the Saussurian view of word and meaning as fixed and move on maybe to a Bakhtinian view.  His concept of chronotope illustrates perfectly the significant impact of time and space on meaning.
