Dear all,

How do you understand this sentence about a woman (the female commissar) who
is about to give birth?

 Роды начались днем.
     - Ой! - рыхло, по-бабьи, вскрикнула Вавилова, почувствовав, как острая,
всепроникающая боль вдруг охватила ее.

Как можно вскрикнуть рыхло?! How can one “vskrknut’ rykhlo”?  And am I
correct in my understanding of‘по-бабьи?

У нас следующее:
‘Oy!’ she screamed wearily (??), sounding more like a peasant woman than a
commissar.  The pain was sharp, and it penetrated everywhere.
