Many thanks to everyone who responded, both on- and off-list! The concensus is clearly that the stress should fall on the third syllable. 

The presumed readership consists mainly of undergraduate students with little or no command of Russian, and an equally rudimentary (if any) knowledge of the 19th-century European history. The idea is to get them appreciate the poem for its intensity of the battle depiction and the sentiment it evoked, and keep stumbling over the foreign names to some reasonable minimum.
