I read it as the complement to the first part -- that he treated you 
(the generic you, like French "on") the same whether you were up or 
down. The author isn't speaking of any particular recipient of the 
treatment, just the generic "you." Lilienthal didn't gloat if you lost, 
nor did he kiss up to you if you won.
