Vasmer tells us:
От др-русск., ст-слав. одѣꙗти, итер. от о-дѣте, дѣте; см. Мейе, Et. 317.

I've posted the entry from Sreznevsky (1902, v.2, p. 627) here:

that the meaning has been pretty stable since the word's appearance.

Deriving a noun in this way with {-aло} has Russian parallels, among
them the closely related "покрывало".
