Dear Robert,

The song described in Grossman's essay (Beethoven "Irlandskaia
zastol'naia") was one of the most popular songs among soldiers during
the war. See, for example, Olga Berrgolts's comments from "Dnevnye
zvezdy" regarding
this:http://militera.lib.ru/prose/russian/berggolts_of/09.html

According to some memoirs, the gramophone record featuring this song
is related to the performance of Professor Anatolii Leonidovich Dolivo
(Dolivo-Sobotnitskii) (1893-1965).

All best,
Sasha Smith
