Here's a belated footnote to the discussion on being "in the same boat" 
in Russian. There's an article by the Russian specialist in phraseology 
Valerii Mokienko on the Russian history of the expression: Valerii M. 
Mokienko,"Die russische Geschichte des Amerikanismus 'Wir sitzen alle in 
einem Boot,'" /Proverbium/ 14 (1997): 231-245. The expression about 
sitting in the same boat has been tracked back to Cicero by Wolfgang 
Mieder in his book /Deutsche Redensarten, Sprichwörter/ /und Zitate. 
Studien zu ihrer Herkunft, Überliefung und Verwendung /(Vienna, 1995).
