At one point in this story, Teffi is recalling sunrises that moved her.  She describes one below:

Небо, еще без солнца, чуть-чуть розовело на востоке, и легкая, свинцовая дымка, точно растушеванный карандашный мазок на алой пропускной бумаге, обозначала место, откуда прорвутся лучи. 

We've translated this as:

The still sunless sky was only just turning pink in the east, and a faint leaden haze, looking like a crayon smear on scarlet blotting paper, showed where the sun’s rays would burst through.  

It is an arresting image, particularly the crayon smear on scarlet blotting paper.  But is anyone aware of any particular significance it may have?
