Dear SEELANGSers,

I wanted to alert those of you who are in Washington, D.C. to a film
program that I am co-curating with Joanna Raczynska of the Department of
Film Programs at the National Gallery of Art this spring.

The series is titled "Artists, Amateurs, Alternative Spaces: Experimental
Cinema in Eastern Europe, 1960-1990." Its schedule of screenings can be
found here:
http://www.nga.gov/content/ngaweb/calendar/film-programs/experimental6090.html?pageNumber=1

Most of the films we're showing are very rarely screened in the U.S., and
as a group, they'll shed new light on the scope of experimental filmmaking
across the former socialist Bloc. We're hoping to have a website that
describes the series in detail, with stills, film descriptions, and some
film clips go live in May.

Our first screening will be this Saturday, *April 5* -- we'll be showing
Dušan Makavejev's "Innocence Unprotected" and Jonas Mekas' "Reminiscences
of a Journey to Lithuania." The screenings will be accompanied by a pane
discussion on these films and the essay film form co-organized with the
University of Maryland.

This is an excellent spring to be a lover of Eastern European cinema in
Washington because the NGA, in collaboration with the American Film
Institute, will also have two other film series:

A Jan Němec retrospective:

Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema:
http://www.nga.gov/content/ngaweb/calendar/film-programs/polishcinema.html?pageNumber=1

All of the NGA screenings are free and open to the public.
