Paul,

Your colleague may have  a point as far as capitalists or, rather,
"capitalism" (pursuit of economic efficiency), are concerned. The reason
for which Mexicans go to Texas, Poles and Lithuanians go to GB and Tadjiks
go to Moscow is pay differential, or different cost of labour in different
parts of the globe. All these people are "interesting" for capitalists
because they can be paid less (and often treated as less human).
