The following is a translation of an invitation to a march for the rights
Mexican Deaf, which will take place in Mexico City. The original text
follows, for those of you who may prefer it.
As an attachment, I'm sending you all a PDF document with a more careful
translation of the proposed amendment to the Mexican Constitution that
seeks the recognition of the language and culture of Mexican Deaf
communities.

Hello Deaf,
Hard of Hearing and
hearing friends:
I want to inform everybody to spread the word of the march and support
each other, the deaf and hearing. Since two years ago we have presented to
the Lower Chamber a motion for the official recognition of Mexican Sign
Language (Lengua de Señas Mexicana) as a minority language in the
Constitution, to achieve bilingual education for the deaf population; until
now the initiative passed one instance, but its definitive approval is
still pending and there we are exerting pressure, we know it is hard because
it implies a change in the 4th article of our Mexican Constitution, but
we're not going to stop fighting. Hopefully we will make it and we will
achieve the right and warranty of a bilingual education that will free us
form the margination we are living in.
Our proposal and demands :
1.- Official recognition of the Lengua de Señas Mexicana
2.- Respect for the rights of the deaf and adition to the 4th Article of our
constitution.
And we hope to count with the support and participation of Deaf people
from the Federal District [México City] to do the March with the deaf
associations from the Federal District the 15th of March of 2001 at 9:00
a.m. in the street: av. Reforma, close to the metro station Capultepec.

Les quiero informar a todos que anuncien la marcha y apoyen unos a los
otros, los sordos y oyentes. Desde hace dos años hemos presentado la camara
de diputados federal, una mocion para que la lengua de señas sea reconocida
oficialmente como lengua minoritaria e incluida asi en la constitucion ,
logrando con ello una educacion bilingue para la poblacion sorda ; hasta el
momento ya paso una instancia pero falta la aprobacion definitiva y ahi es
donde estamos presionando, sabemos que es dificil pues significa modificar
un articulo 4o. de nuestra constitucion Mexicana , pero no dejamos de luchar
.. ¡Ojala¡ lo logremos pues con esto alcanzaremos el derecho y la garantia de
educacion bilingue que nos libere de la marginacion en que vivimos.
Nuestra propuersta y exigencias :
1.- Reconocimiento oficial de Lengua de señas Mexicana
2.- El respeto a los derechos del sordo y adiccion al articulo 4o. de
Nuestra cobnstitucion.
Y esperamos contar con el apoyo y la participacion de las personas
sordas al Distrito Federal, Mexico para realizar la Marcha con las
asociaciones del sordos del Distrito Federal el dia 15 de Marzo del 2001 a
las 9:00 a.m. en la calle : av. Reforma, cerca del metro Chapultepec.
Gracias Por la atencion que nos presten y por el apoyo que nos brinden
