The Less-Commonly-Taught Languages Center (Department of Linguistics)
at the University of Pittsburgh seeks applications for a full-time
assistant instructor position (non-tenure-stream) to be hired on a
twelve-month contract from July 1, 2002 through June 30, 2003,
renewable annually. This position is subject to budgetary
approval. Qualifications required are native or near-native
proficiency in ASL; Ph.D. or MA in Deaf Studies, Linguistics, Applied
Linguistics, Foreign Language Education, or TESOL. At least three
years ASL teaching experience.  Ability to relate to both deaf and
hearing cultures. Preferred qualifications include American Sign
Language Teachers' Association Certification. Ability to teach
advanced courses in the linguistic structures of ASL, advanced
communication in ASL, Deaf culture, or sociology/sociolinguistics of
the Deaf community.

Responsibilities: Teaching 6 courses per year (over three terms);
teaching duties will range from beginning ASL through advanced
courses.  In addition, the position will involve coordination of the
ASL curriculum, observing 5-7 part-time ASL instructors, and advising
students in the proposed ASL certificate program. Solid teaching,
administrative, and supervisory skills are essential.
