Asli,

I am just catching up on my reading. Your question and the mention
of the death of Ken Hale recently (on another list) just got my
attention at the same time.

http://mit.edu/linguistics/www/ken_hale_tribute.html is a website
made to honor Ken on his retirement two years ago. I suggest that
you read through the "contributions" from Ken Hale's friends,
colleagues, and students -- you'll get some ideas about being open to
various methods at the same time. Different language communities
will respond to different techniques. Teach the people you're
studying what you're finding out and see if it rings true to what
they understand.
