Just in case there are any high flying signed langauge linguists who are
interested in considering a sabaatical visit to Ireland to pursue a max.
one-year research project please see below..and don't hesitate to contact me
should this prove interesting.

I would imagine that work in information and communications technology or
software engineering (?) may be possible domains in which a signed langauge
related project might fit...but I leave it to you to consider the potential
options that may arise. Full details of the call for applications for the SFI
Walton Visitor Awards are below.

SFI E.T.S. Walton Visitor Awards

SFI Deadline: 15th December 2003

APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED

Summary:
Named after Ireland's 1951 Nobel laureate in physics

Grants normally ranging up to €200,000 per year, including a provision for
salary, laboratory, and moving expenses

Enables highly qualified scholars resident outside Ireland to carry out
research projects of their own choice in Ireland for periods of up to one year

Applications received for this deadline will be expected to start their
project in Ireland within 12 months i.e. on or before Dec 2004.

Introduction:
Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) advances national scientific progress by
awarding grants for research on a competitive basis in those fields of
science, mathematics, computer science, software engineering, and
engineering that underpin biotechnology (BioT) and information and
communications technology (ICT).

SFI's E.T.S. Walton Visitor Awards programme enables highly qualified
academic and industrial researchers resident outside Ireland to carry out
research projects of their own choice in Ireland. Applications may be
submitted for research stays normally of three to twelve months. Short-term
study tours, participation in conferences, or educational visits are not
eligible for funding.

Eligibility
To be eligible for an E.T.S. Walton Award, individuals must possess at
least the three following qualifications:
·	Doctorate level or comparable research experience (Ph.D., D.Sc. or
equivalent),
·	An independent research career of at least seven years, and
·	A proven record of leadership and accomplishment outside Ireland
appropriate 	to international standards of the field.

SFI will give priority to nominees who are at an early or mid-stage of
independent research careers. SFI will also consider nominees who are
recognised senior leaders in their fields and can make a significant
contribution to advancing the biotechnology or information and
communications technology strategy, or both, of the host institution.

TCD INTERNAL DEADLINE
Please note that there is a nomination deadline of Tuesday, 2nd December
2003 for this scheme as only 5 nominations per institution are allowed and
a decision has to be made by the Dean of Research and/or the Research
Committee as to whom should be supported by College.  Late nominations WILL
NOT be accepted.

If you know of anyone who would like to be considered for this scheme
please submit the documentation listed below to the Research Office by 5pm
Tuesday 2nd December 2003.

1A. Contact details of nominee
1B. Research body details
2A. Research project title
2B. Research summary (max 250 words)
3. CV of nominee ( max 5 pages)

All of the above should be submitted to Doris Alexander, Research officer,
O'Reilly Institute by the 2nd December, Tuesday at 5pm

Incomplete nomination documentation will result in that candidate being
disqualified from the nomination process.  NO LATE applications will be
accepted.

Full Applications to SFI

Please note if College chooses your candidate you will be required to
submit the full application documentation to SFI by the deadline of 15th
December 2003.  This includes the documentation listed above plus:

Project description (5 pages): including background, objectives of research
programme, strategic relevance of research programme, research design and
methods, literature cited, work programme plan and integration of nominee
into Host Research group.    Given the short turn around time it may be in
the interest of the candidate to have already considered these aspects even
prior to hearing whether their nomination has been accepted by College.

Budget

Salary verification documents - Please note that SFI will contribute to a
competitive salary, based on the applicant's current salary, or an Irish
Third level Institution salary, that has been verified and agreed with the
host institution in line with guidelines published on the SFI site at
http://www.sfi.ie/content/content.asp?section_id=282&language_id=1

The salary figure should:
- 	Include provision for employer's current PRSI contribution, June 2002
=10.75%
-	Specify € exchange rate used
-	Include supporting documentation verifying current salary, and/or salary
requested e.g.
1. Copy of payslip with letter from salaries office of home institution
2. Copy of signed letter of offer
3. Details of relevant point on scale and confirmation letter from home
institution

Any candidate nominated should contact Pat Daly in the Staff office to
discuss salary and obtain a letter of offer.  The Research Office will not
be able to offer assistance in this process as we are unable to provide
such letters of offer.


Nomination Letter

Nomination letter from host institution ( if you are nominated the Research
office will help you to organize the letter for the candidate which will be
signed by the Provost, Dr John Hegarty)








Reminder:

The Research Office closes at 4.00pm each day.

In general from the end of August until further notice the Research Office
will be very short staffed and may be unable to deal with proposals/queries
in a timely manner.
