Hi Kathy,

By alphabet I mean an ordered list of symbols. The SignWriting alphabet
is ordered and hierarchical. It is possible to sort signs
alphabetically in SignWriting using something called the the
SignSpelling Sequence.

SignWriting is a visual writing system for paper or computer. The
alphabet has over 25 thousand symbols. A symbol can be a handshape,
some type of movement or contact, or a facial expression. Each written
sign is a 2 dimensional view either behind or above the signer. Signs
are stacked vertically with the head centered in each column for clear
right and lift sides. There are punctuation marks for pauses and
stops. There are also lanes within columns for body weight shifts. And
there are special symbols for fine grained detail.

Literacy without spoken language is possible and valuable.
