FUPA

Dear ura-list members,

I want to express my support for the inclusion of FUPA in the Basic
Multilingual Plane (BMP) of the universal character set. One good reason
for the inclusion is that linguists doing typological comparisons or
investigating language contacts need to quote language material from
different language families. I faced the problem as I was writing an
article in which I compared typologically Finno-Ugric, Turkic, Indo-Aryan
and Iranian languages. In my Macintosh I had installed a FUPA font and
another multilingual font, but in spite of this I was not able to write all
the language examples I had found in literature. Now, consider the
situation that a specialist of Indo-European or Turkic languages wants to
quote material from Finno-Ugric sources... It is simply illogical to think
that FUPA is a curiosity used by a handful of obscure people called
Finno-Ugrists.
