ANNOUNCEMENT FOR PAPERS FOR FUSAC CONFERENCE,
             MAY 29, 30, and 31 2010, CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, MONTREAL

Dear FUSAC Member:

We welcome you on board, and hope that you will attend and
present your
research at the forthcoming conference of the Finno-Ugric Studies
Association of Canada! Next year’s biannual FUSAC conference will convene in
Montreal at Concordia University, May 2010.

Mark down these dates! We are scheduled for three days: Saturday, May 29;
Sunday, May 30: and Monday, May 31. We will definitely be using the Saturday
and Sunday dates. Should there be an overflow of participants, of which at
this time I am not certain, we will use also the third day, Monday, May 31.
I will know more about our participants’ roster towards the end of the year,
and inform you then whether we will need the Monday date or not. By having
our first actual meeting day on a Saturday, this should enable members to
travel to Montreal on Friday, thereby locking in a weekend (and cheaper)
rate.

The deadline for receipt of proposed paper titles and a short
c.v. is December
15, 2009, but please provide me a preliminary indication on your desire to
attend as soon as you can. A simple “yes” or “no” at this point is
sufficient. Then, send in your paper title and a short c.v. by mid-December
to Pete Brown, pbrown at ric.edu <mailto:pbrown at ric.edu> . (Although the
website mentions that one should submit by February 15, 2010 a short
abstract [one paragraph] of one’s paper, it would be appreciated if you
could submit your abstract earlier.)

The Finno-Ugric Studies Association of Canada is dedicated to
expanding knowledge of the Uralic peoples and Uralia. Accordingly, any topic
devoted entirely or partially to them is welcome. Topics include
anthropology, archaeology, economics, ethnic studies, folklore, history,
linguistics, literature, migration, music, political science, sociology, and
other disciplines. The varieties of specializations within each of these
disciplines are, of course, legion. Comparative approaches involving other
peoples and places are most welcome.

FUSAC is a member of the Canadian Federation of the Humanities and Social
Sciences; the Canadian Federation holds its Congresses once a year. FUSAC
attends its Congresses once every other year.

Therefore, we are meeting under the Canadian Federation’s auspices. Along
with us, 74 other Canadian scholarly organizations will be meeting in the
8-day period for the 2010 Congress, from Friday, May 28 through Friday, June
4. The more closely allied organizations meeting during this time are: the
Hungarian Studies Association of Canada (May 29-May 30), Association for the
Advancement of Scandinavian Studies (May 28-31), Canadian Association of
Slavists (May 28-31), Canadian Linguistic Association (May 29-31), Canadian
Anthropology Society (June 1-June 3), Folklore Studies Association of Canada
(May 28-May 30), Canadian Association for the Study of Names (May 29-31),
Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics (June 1-June 3), Canadian
Historical Association (May 30-June 1), Canadian Political Science
Association (June 1-June 3), Canadian Comparative Literature Association
(May 28-May 30), Canadian Association for Commonwealth Literature and
Language Studies (May 28-May 30), Canadian Studies (May 29-May 30).
Thus, we have a real intellectual tour de force awaiting us all. I would
also like to point out that the Canadian Federation Congresses have
marvelous book exhibits that feature a great number of academic publishers.

Montreal is a fascinating city and will be at our fingertips to explore and
enjoy during the Federation Congress! Visit the Montreal Chamber of Commerce

The Federation and Concordia University automatically provide the following
audio-visual services for our room: computer, data projector, screen, basic
sound system, Internet access, and a connection for laptop. The computer
supplied will be a Windows based system with access to the Internet and can
load files in MS-Office format (versions 2003 and 2007) and PDF file format.

You have to inform me whether you might need an overhead transparency
projector, a DVD player, a 35 mm. slide projector, a portable CD player, or
a flip chart with paper and pen.

Please indicate what special needs you may wish to have provided for:
special food-catering needs, handicap-assistance (e.g., wheelchair
accessibility, level-entry situations, special pillows, assistive-listening
issues ). Our Secretary, Liisa Duncan, peerlessly represented our
association during a late September Canadian Federation 2010 conference
meeting at Concordia University, located very close to the heart of
Montreal. Inter alia, Liisa reported that Concordia “…is a small campus and
so should be easy to navigate. Most of the buildings seemed quite nice and
modern.”

Anyone desiring to participate must have paid their FUSAC dues by December
15. Send your dues ($30 for regular members, $10 for students and retired
individuals) to our Treasurer: Professor Päivi  Koskinen, Modern Languages
Department, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, 12666  72d Avenue, Surrey,
British Columbia V3W2M8, Canada.

In addition the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences
assesses an attendance fee for all who participant. Their fee structure in
Canadian dollars is: (1) Early registration fee by March 31: students,
retired, and unwaged delegates $45, postdoctoral fellows $65, regular

and (3) on-site registration fee as of May 27: students, retired, and

To our members in the Russian Federation (Российская Федерация),
should anyone need a letter to assist in obtaining a visa from a Canadian
consulate, please inform me, and I will be happy to compose such a document
for you.

If you have any questions, feel free to direct them to me. Shortly, I will
provide information on accommodations at the Congress.

My warmest regards and I hope to see you all in Montreal!

Sincerely,
