Dear Colleagues,

as reported recently on the Uralistica website and on the Estonian UGRIMUGRI list (see below): Lidiya Petrovna Vasikova, professor of Mari State University, linguist and outstanding researcher of the Mari language, was killed yesterday, hit by a car.

Born 1927, Lidiya Vasikova was the first Mari woman ever to obtain a PhD and become a university professor. Like many native-speaker Finno-Ugrists of Russia, she studied in Tartu with Paul Ariste in the 1950s; for her merits and her interest in Estonia and the Finno-Ugric kindred peoples, she was later decorated with the Terra Mariana Cross of the Republic of Estonia. Lidiya Vasikova was a versatile linguist with a wide range of publications in contrastive, Russian and Mari linguistics, also known for her devoted work to promote her native Hill Mari language.

Lidiya Vasikova will be sorely missed by many Mari, Finno-Ugric and Russian linguists, colleagues, students and friends.
