Dear All,

a discussion in the Finnish "Kielitiede" group on Facebook just led to the founding of a new FB group, "Curiosa Uralica" (https://www.facebook.com/groups/266020930562399/ <https://www.facebook.com/groups/266020930562399/> ). In this group, you can post examples of misinformation and misunderstandings concerning Uralic, as published by "real", serious linguists. (Lay etymologies and "alternative" Urheimat theories are probably too numerous and too depressing.) As we know, such misunderstandings and errors abound; Jan Eng's detailed study on misinterpreted and maltreated Norwegian in international linguistic literature (https://www.duo.uio.no/handle/10852/33250 ) is a good example of this, showing how the errors of competent and accomplished linguists, when dealing with a "less widely known" language, range from strange spellings and funny typos to complete syntactic nonsense.

Uralists with a Facebook presence, welcome to the group and feel free to post whatever strange, weird or misinformed statements or analyses of any Uralic language you may have encountered. Perhaps this material can some day be used for a more in-depth study on defective documentation.

Best
JL
