Dear All,

apologies for cross-postings – I tried to approve this message in the queue on the listserver, and it disappeared from there but doesn't show up in the mail archive yet, so chances are that you might get it twice, once the Helsinki server wakes up. Forwarded, perhaps for the second time, from Anne Tamm an invitation to the online lecture in the PARTE series, given by Renate Pajusalu, and information about the Kindred People's Month on Jupiter – not the planet but the free web channel of the Estonian public-service broadcasting company.

Please note: all list members should be able to send their messages directly to the list address ura-list at helsinki.fi <mailto:ura-list at helsinki.fi> . If your message doesn't get through, the usual reasons are (a) that you are sending your message from a different address than the one with which you subscribed the list, so the server doesn't recognize you; (b) that the message is too big. To reduce the size of the messages and avoid clogging people’s mailboxes, instead of attaching files to your messages please send links or copy-paste the text into the message body.

Best
jl

> Good to have a Finno-Ugric talk in October! The abstract is attached.
>
> Let me also call your attention to the free access to the program of the Days of the Kindred People (Hõimupäevad 2022) at the Estonian broadcasting company. As part of the celebrations of Hõimupäevad, the Fenno-Ugria Foundation in Estonia will be recommending a selection of programmes and films about Uralic indigenous peoples. These include many cultural anthropological documentaries on the ethnography of Uralic, Finno-Ugric peoples. You will find them on jupiter.err.ee, and you can find many if not all links copied below. The films and radio programs date from the 1970s and 1980s, mostly, but there are earlier and later ones as well. They include many already extinct peoples, such as the Kamass and Livonians, but also the Saami, Mansi, Komi, Khanty, Nenets, Nganasan, Selkup, Udmurt, Mari, Erzya, Moksha and many Finnic peoples plus much on Estonian dialects. Also for instance Ket among the Siberian folks. the Fenno-Ugria Foundation lets us know on the website that the Days of the Kindred People, Hõimupäevad, are the most important series of public events in Estonia that are organised by the Fenno-Ugria Foundation, to introduce Finno-Ugric peoples and to promote cooperation. The tradition of talking about kindred peoples and their cultures in the third week of October began in 1931, but was discontinued during the Soviet era. In 1988, the tradition was revived and since 2011, on the third Saturday of October it is celebrated as a national holiday.
> The films can be viewed outside of Estonia as well (at least in Vienna), for 20 or so more days from now. Mostly, the films are in Estonian, but some are without any extra text or little text, and some are in Russian.

Elatives instead of partitives in Estonian Wh-questions

Renate Pajusalu, University of Tartu

The talk discusses an elative wh-construction [mis NPnominative NPelative V?] in the Estonian language, as in (1).
(1)
Mis sa ta-st kiusa-d?

what 2SG 3SG-ELAT bully-2SG
'Don’t bully him!' (lit. ‘Why are you bullying him?’)

Formally the construction is a question, but pragmatically it can be regarded as prohibition or negation of the sense of the proposition. It is a mixed construction, which consists of lexical, morphological, and pragmatic elements. The aim is to analyse what motivates the formation of the meaning of the construction.

Pajusalu, R. (2006). Multiple motivations for meaning of an elative wh-construction in Estonian. Trames Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences, 10 (4), 324−340.
