Outline
Study and residence abroad research has established itself as a buoyant sub-field of Applied Linguistics and International Student Mobility, reflecting the theoretical and applied interest that study abroad holds as a language learning context involving significant and growing numbers of participating students around the world. In the case of language learning, that interest especially revolves around the nature of the learner's linguistic development as well as the role of a wide range of input, social, personal and contextual factors.
This conference follows on the European transnational SAREP project (Study Abroad Research in European Context) which ran as an EU-COST Action in 2016-2020, and is intended as a timely opportunity for colleagues across the field to come together to share their work. Papers are welcome on all aspects of language learning during a stay abroad, and in particular with respect to how the following three sets of factors shape language development:

  *   individual differences
  *   diverse learner populations (e.g., learner activities while abroad, specialization before going abroad, pre-residence abroad training and mentoring during residence abroad, etc.)
  *   diverse target languages
Papers reporting recent developments and directions in the field as well as innovative thematic and methodological approaches are encouraged, as are contributions from early career researchers. Presentations related to residence abroad that fall outside these broad areas will also be considered. While research may focus on any second language, presentations should be made in either of the languages of the conference, English or French.

Abstract submission
Abstracts for oral presentations should be submitted at https://rall.sciencesconf.org. Abstracts should be submitted as a Word document, not exceeding 300 words (excluding references), and should be anonymous.
Deadline for submissions: 15 April 2023
We expect to inform presenters of the outcome of the review process in early May 2023.

Appel à communications
Les recherches centrées sur le séjour en immersion représentent aujourd'hui un sous-domaine dynamique, constitué de travaux en linguistique appliquée et en études sur la mobilité transnationale. L'essor qui caractérise ce sous-domaine reflète l'intérêt à la fois théorique et pratique que portent les chercheurs et le grand public à l'apprentissage d'une langue étrangère pendant un séjour en immersion. Cet intérêt se centre sur l'impact du séjour sur l'apprentissage de différentes compétences langagières, ainsi que le rôle joué par de nombreux facteurs, dont des facteurs sociaux, personnels, contextuels, etc. dans cet apprentissage.
Faisant suite au projet transnational SAREP (Study Abroad Research in European Context, 2016-2020), une EU-COST Action, le colloque prévu à Nice vise à fournir un cadre propice aux réflexions sur le passé et l'avenir des recherches dans ce domaine. Nous invitons des communications sur tout aspect de l'apprentissage d'une langue lors d'un séjour en immersion, et en particulier en lien avec l'impact éventuel de trois groupes de facteurs sur le développement langagier :

  *   Les différences individuelles
  *   La diversité des populations d'apprenants (ex. en fonction de l'âge des apprenants, de la spécialisation des étudiants avant leur départ, de la formation en amont du séjour, des expériences de tutorat pendant le séjour, etc.)
  *   La diversité des langues cibles
Nous encourageons des communications qui présentent des développements récents et novateurs (au niveau thématique et / ou méthodologique), ainsi que des contributions de jeunes chercheurs. Toute proposition de communication portant sur le séjour en immersion sera considérée.

Envoi d'une proposition de communication
Les propositions de communication (orale ou affichée) devront être soumises sur le site du colloque (https://rall.sciencesconf.org). Les propositions ne devront pas dépasser 300 mots (hors références), être anonymes et être rédigées en anglais ou en français.
Date limite d'envoi de propositions : 15 avril 2023
Notification d'acceptation aux participants : début mai 2023
