"Carpetbagger!"
--New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, campaigning for New York's seat for
U. S. Senate, in Arkansas, July 1999.
The Making of America database has "carpet-bag" in the LADIES'
REPOSITORY, April 1845, pg. 126, col. 1.
AMERICA IN SO MANY WORDS (1997) by David K. Barnhart and Allan A. Metcalf
has "carpetbagger" as the word of the year for 1868. The DICTIONARY OF
AMERICANISMS cited Rose, GREAT COUNTRY, pg. 181: "Many of them are what the
Southerners call 'carpet-baggers,' men traveling with little luggage and less
character, making political capital out of the present state of affairs."
The Making of America database has another 1868 citation, from the
NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER.
There are also two hits from REPORT OF THE DEBATES AND PROCEEDINGS OF
THE CONVENTION FOR THE REVISION OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE STATE OF OHIO,
1850-1851. However, when I tried to click it on, the pages weren't displayed!
