Buck Dancers

Jerry Garcia, much mourned, used sing (in Uncle John's Band):
"It's a buck dancer's choice my friend; better take my advice.
You know all the rules by now and the fire from the ice."

My question is: What's a "Buck Dancer"? Might it be someone who used get
paid for dancing with strangers?

Also BTW, can someone please point me to an archive, where I could search
and not waste time asking questions already answered?
