Snapped Up

I dislike this phrase. "Snapped up" always seems to be used to indicate that something is being, or should be, consumed rapidly, while it appears to me that the item in question isn't actually really being snapped up at all. Writers using "snapped up" seem intent on supporting an otherwise unsupportable claim that a trend is happening, or a fad, or a new American cultural phenomenon.

A usage in the Times more along my thinking:

"They have not snapped up every $3,000 seat in the Rainbow Room, purchased every $1,000 ticket to every "gala" event, hired every limousine -- or even every baby sitter."
