One of the first firefighters to reach the burning brownstone was Mark Kurtz, 33, who said firefighters found their way blocked by piles of paper, furniture and odds and ends. "It's called a Collyers mansion," he said, using a term from the 1940's inspired by the famously junk-filled home of two recluse brothers in Harlem. "We had to get everything out of the way before we could advance."
