This is from "ComputerUser" Volume 1, No. 1. I haven't heard the
term before. Rima

"Portals are gateways to the Internet, which help us sift through the
haystack of Web info. Examples are Yahoo and Alta Vista. They tout
various search engines that scour the Web for a keyword or phrase.
The latest attempt to give order to Web chaos is the vortal. Where
portals cater to the widest range of users, vortals (vertical
portals) attract an audience interested in a single theme or idea.
The sites are organized around a particular topic, such as
butterflies, cars, US military personnel. Good vortals provide users
with a variety of services designed to assist their vertical audience
with its efforts to winnow the chaff from the wheat."
