Sometimes Californians aren't so fancy-pants.  You may be familiar with a
twisty brick-paved street in San Francisco (car chases are always filmed
there) called Lombard Street.  Pronounced, usually, "Lahhmbard".  My
grandmother, who was born (1876) and raised a few blocks from there,
invariably called it "Lmberd Street" which, she told me, was what everybody
else around there called it, too.
