   OED has "hi fi" from 1950.
   POPULAR SCIENCE MONTHLY, September 1947, pg. 202, has the story "Hi-Fi Amplifier Gets ALL the Music."

POPULAR SCIENCE MONTHLY--It's really a shame that NYU doesn't get PSM or POPULAR MECHANICS.  It's a crazy quilt of interesting science stuff.
   I was watching the American Movie Classics channel at about 12:30 a.m.  It did a newsreel of PSM stuff from about 1947.  I saw William Maxon's frozen dinners.  Then I saw a science project from UCLA.  The project involved what I heard as "chad," or little spinning wheels.  But it might have just been late at night.  I don't know when AMC will re-run that.
