Barley Pop?

I was watching a hockey game last night, and a player being
interviewed between periods used the phrase "barley pop" in a context
clearly suggesting he meant beer (kicking back and watching a game on
tv, barley pop in hand). If I'm remembering the biographical info
correctly, he's from Minnesota, but, given that he's a hockey player,
Canadian influence of some sort can't be excluded. There's nothing in
DARE under "barley", and the last volume I have ends with O. Is
anyone familiar with this?
