Is a German spelling of Polish zhlub (trying to look more Yiddish?)
driving out the original?  See this site from The Washington Post:

"If Clara sticks with pedestrians, she'll lower her chances of being
murdered, but she's stuck, by definition, with low-achieving schlubs."
