In my first wife's Bavarian household the pastry was known as a Berliner
Krapfen, a pfannekuche being what we'd call a crepe.

-- Reclams Etymologisches Woeterbuc defines Krapfen as "Schmalzgebaeck"
which I take to mean "deep fat fried"
