There was never a better doctoral mentor than Fred Cassidy.  I still
remember the very first class I took from this excellent teacher.  He had
that wonderful gift of letting you go with an idea and not overmentor you.
When you were his research assistant, he let you do your work, not his; a
fact that occasionally got him into trouble with small-minded deanlets.

I will dearly miss the friend of my lifetime.
