Watakushiwa nihongoka wakarimasen!  It has been way too long.

What's the evidence for the gloss?  It sounds unlikely to me.

Wait a minute -- Maybe it says "it hurts her" ?  (Ugly josan's foot
hurts, so she's a misfit . . . )

Why do I think that would be "itaiwa"? I'm sure I've misspelled that,
but "edewa" could be an even worse misspelling.  After all, you say this
retelling is supposed to be Bamboo English, and it sure seems to
misspell a lot of other things.

Maybe I've chanced on a plausible explanation despite all my accumulated
ignorance.

And maybe not.
