Here in southern New England, a lobster roll is a lobster (salad)
sandwich on a hot dog roll (likewise for crab, clam, shrimp). The
first time I ordered one, I was expecting something more like an egg
roll. I haven't done an exhaustive survey, but it's my impression
that this usage is restricted to shell fish.
