Updated 12:44 PM ET March 23, 2000
HELSINKI (Reuters) - More than 40 percent of Finns are now online,
keeping Finland at the worldwide forefront of Internet use, a polling agency
has found.
The number of Internet users in Finland was now 2.2 million compared with
1.7 million a year ago, in the country of 5.1 million people, pollsters
Taloustutkimus said on Thursday.
When Taloustutkimus started charting Internet use in Finland in 1995,
there were just over 370,000 users.
Internet use has grown rapidly in Finland. The country now leading the
world -- ahead of the United States, Iceland, Norway and Sweden -- in terms
of the number of computers per capita linked to the Internet, according to
mid-1999 data.
Finland, home of telecom equipment maker Nokia, also leads the world in
mobile phone use, with over 65 percent of the population having a cellphone.
