Looking at the development of the western world
starting in 1492 in the hands of the Spanish they
would have had to have had a place to store something
away from the elements and inclement weathers. They
could have done so simply in the style that they were
accustomed to in the "BODEGA", being able to
"abodegar" (store something for future use) which at
the same time may have been placed under the "Tienda"
which would have been a "tarp" or other covering which
could be called a "tent" in English, used to protect
individuals and goods not yet in the "bodega" from the
sun and rain. Of course, Puerto Rico and its
inhabitants have free reign to travel to the US and
bring the historical development of their language
with them. Migration and history tell a lot.
Mercado. market, merchant, Mercancia all "trade"
goods related by origin from Europe and adopted into
the local language and economies. Anyone up for
sueter vs. chompa?
