In Battle Creek in the 40s grape juice and gin (or vodka) was known,
respectfully, as "Purple Jesus". In the fall we'd dump a bottle of vodka
into a gallon jug of cider for warmth at football games. And for an easy
buzz, "V 'n V", i.e., vodka and Vernors.
