Nana

My mother's preference for being addressed as Nana by her grandkids could
not have been to differentiate it from "the other Grandma" because she was
an Oma; she thought "Grandma" and "-pa" sounded too old--that's what we
called her parents. My father's parents were G'ma and G'pop (or
Pop-pop or just plain Pop)--pronounced [dzhi:pap]. My parents were "Mom"
and "the old man"--I think everybody chooses albeit from a limited set.
