Unsignalized; Mad Cow Disease

I was in North Jersey today and found:

1) on NJ route 18 southbound at New Brunswich the sign "Unsignalized
crossings next three miles".

"Unsignalized" is a rather high-falutin' word to appear on a highway sign.
"Unsignaled" conveys the same meaning and is
 - more likely to be recognized by a driver
 - more quickly read (probably the reason highway signs are usually
monosyllabic is to allow them to be read faster so that the driver's
attention is diverted for less time from the highway)
 - less likely to consternate philologically-minded drivers such as members
of this list

On the FM radio station at 102.7 MHz (if I read the dial correctly) there was
a sports talk show on which someone was discussing "Mad Cow disease" meaning
in this case athletes (like Babe Ruth) who eat too much and get fat.
