TAILGATE PICNIC

OED has 1970. I have a recent book about the Big Blue (New York Giants) tailgate parties.
From the NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE, 26 September 1963, pg. 20, col. 1:

_Touch Down for a Tailgate Picnic_
By Clementine Paddleford
Tailgate picnics take over for the football season. After game parties have lost their importance.

--------------------------------------------------------"VOICE WITH A SMILE"

From the NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE, 22 September 1963, pg. 50, col. 2:

_H. G. Stokes,_
_Coined "Voice_
_With a Smile"_
Howard G. Stokes, 75, who held executive positions with the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. from 1911 until his retirement in 1948, died yesterday at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. His home was in Hamilton, N. Y.
When he retired, Mr. Stokes was radio advertisinf manager of AT&T. He was originator of the widely-used slogan of the telephone company, "the voice with the smile wins."

"PASSION FOR ANONYMITY"

From the NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE, 28 September 1963, pg. 8, col. 3:

_Louis Brownlow_
_He Coined the Phrase_
_"Passion for Anonymity"_
Louis Brownlow, 84, a man with a passion for tidiness in government, died yesterday. (...)
Probably all of these achievements will be forgotten, though, because of his gift for a colorful phrase. A former newspaper writer, he was serving as chairman of President Roosevelt's Committee on Administrative Management when he coined the phrase "passion for anonymity."
He used it to describe Presidential advisors such as Harry Hopkins and Feliz Frankfurter and--though some of the newspapers poked fun at it--the phrase caught on.

WAITING FOR THEM TO DROP ANOTHER SHOE

Another nice editorial cartoon is in the NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE, 5 October 1963, pg. 10, col. 3.
