'Matchbox' (as a compound or as two words) has taken on a a sense of *size*.
As I mentioned earlier, a matchbox holds small wooden matches, while a box
of matches makes no real comment about the size or length of the matches
contained within it.

'Matchbox sized' is heard often enough, usually referring to model cars and
trucks.

As a size referent, 'matchbox' is useful. I cannot think of anything else
which is of this approximate size.
